Madden. You don't even have to be a gamer or a Football fan to know what this stands for. As it is possibly one of the most successful Video Game franchises ever. Successful does not mean consumers are happy with the game it means that due to the sheer presence people buy it expecting more year after year. I fall into the Category of not being happy with Madden. I am not saying EA is not producing a good product I am stating though that i am not happy with said product. Truthfully the last madden product i was satisfied with was Madden 2005. 2005 I consider to be the Golden year of sports video games due to the fact that many games (especially football) were amazing. So good that many still play that certain title made by 2k sports (i will not mention its name for legal purposes
) But anyhow even though i doubt anyone from the Madden Team is reading this i would like to present my suggestions on making Madden a better game.
1. Break it down to the core and build it up again.
You heard me. Gameplay rebuilt from the ground up. It is better starting all over again with a clean slate than to try and repair the unrepairable. If it takes more than a year i am fine with that personally but start fresh and anew by taking bit's and pieces from other games and blending it with your own creativity. I mean this for virtually everything.
Starting with game play the first thing i would do is scrap the entire running system. When i am playing and i break off a run with Chris Johnson or AP it literally feels like i am gliding on skates. Madden 2004 had one of the best running engines i have ever seen in a football video game in terms of feeling realistic to me. It was Simple yet gave you the feel of a real NFL running back breaking off tackles, hurdling over defenders and getting into the open field. to me it truly felt that i was in control of the runner.
Continuing with the running mechanics i would scrap the highlight stick and revert back to the truck stick. I thought it was the greatest creation in 06 just a simple flick of the stick upwards for a shoulder charge and a push of the stick back to stop running and make the defender fall flat on his face. I don't find it enjoyable having jukes on the analog stick because to me it makes it to easy. When juking used to be assigned to the L1 and RI triggers (for the ps2 anyway) i felt that it was more realistic because it made you have to make more of a split second decision. I am pretty sure that in the NFL sometimes Backs don't have the chance to make that juke and that's exactly what the old running system presented to me, a feel of realism towards the game.
Next to the passing game. While many hated the QB vision cone i believe that if done correctly it could have been a giant success. In real life there is always that one receiver that is usually planned to be the beneficiary of the passing play. The QB essentially locks on to that receiver from the get-go and if that receiver is covered moves on to the next most viable option. With proper tweaking it could develop into something special.
In terms of defense get rid of Pro-tak and just convert back to the old hit stick. Pro-tak I find a bit gimmicky. I find many times that these "Pro-tak" plays are useless as the running back amazingly breaks through about 10 defenders. I understand you want the realism of Chain tackles but i really don't find it acceptable when you see something like that happening i take a semi-realistic hit stick over Tim Tebow plowing through defenders like he is some mutant gazelle like creature. Keep it simple because in the end it will feel more realistic.
As I end part one of this blog. I would like to leave all readers with this quote. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" : Leonardo DaVinci. To me that means that keeping things simple makes them the most worthwhile. thanks for reading and I bid you farewell until part 2

Hey what's up guys? My question/comment today is has/will Coach Cal have a negative impact on Kentucky's basketball tradition? Now I don't mean getting us in trouble with the NCAA, but I am talking about the type of players he recruits. I am only 21 years old, but I bleed blue through and through. When I was old enough to understand basketball, I mostly grew up with Tubby as our coach and got really attached to the players that have came and gone while he was our coach. Players like Tayshaun Prince, Patrick Sparks, Chuck Hayes, Keith Bogans, Gerald Fitch, Lukasz Obrzut to name a few. Now what is so special about these guys you ask? These guys to me are what Kentucky basketball is all about. These guys gave us all they had for four years and the way they embraced UK, the memorable moments they gave us, and their character were all things that just screamed, Kentucky!.
Will Coach Cal ever give us these type of players? Don't get me wrong, I loved the past year we had, Wall and company were amazing to watch play. I just can't help not thinking that they were only here because they HAD to be. I enjoy Cal recruiting all of these great players, but they just don't "feel" like Kentucky type players. As long as Cal is our coach, we will mostly see "One and dones" that use UK and Cal as a stepping stone to the NBA. Maybe it's just me but that doesn't sound like Kentucky Basketball.
Now I will support them with all of my heart cause I love my Wildcats, it will just be hard to get attached to these guys cause once you get used to them, "POOF!" they're gone. Am I one of many that feel like this? Or am I just a homer of my childhood Wildcats? I just don't want the "Kentucky" name to be ruined. This place is the pinnacle of college basketball and select few are lucky enough to wear the blue and white. I just hope that Cal's players understand what it means to have "Kentucky" written across their chests.
Ok how much more fun is this mode to play as say BAP mode like I'm doing now? I wouldn't mind being able to say draft a Tyler Seguin and get some young guys and go from there. Essentially is that what I'll be doing is drafting a team. Also there'll probably be a a cap limit or am I wrong about that? Really looking forward to exploring this game in less than a week now. I wanna start from scratch and I think I'll try something other than Dynasty or BAP mode and go with the GM mOde. Sounds like fun? The way I understand it is there's no more cheesy trades out there. Whoever has time to walk me through this from point A to point z please go for it. I'm all ears. Thanks.

I believe it's time to bump up the practice mode in Madden. I have to admit, I'm one of those guys that spends countless amounts of hours in the practice screen trying to figure things out. It's one of the first modes I try out after the initial menu surfing gets done. I thought of a bunch of things that could be added that would make the practice mode for guys like me more enjoyable.
First, make it more realistic. They wouldn't have to make a practice facility for each team, just work the skins where you can put the logo on the field or around the facility. I don't think that would be too much to ask. Another thing would be to have coaches on the field. Instead of having the Madden Tron Test Mode with the neon players running round, make it where you can take a player and practice moves with a coach. Put actual practice equipment on the field.
Next, I would like the practice mode to have the option to scrimmage a game where you can stay on offense of defense. Another good option would be to try to either score on the Defense, or if you're playing at the Defense you should try to make the Offense go three and out.
Instead of having the gameflow portion of the game, it would have been best if that instruction was added to a practice mode. It seem more logical for someone to learn the plays and get familiar with a gameplan in the practice mode. Then you could see how well your gameplan worked before playing in a actual game. You could scrimmage and see how your offense/defense "Flows".
I just wanted to point out a poll I posted yesterday on OS, and the results garnered from it. I think it's a very interesting phenomenon we might have just stumbled across.
The poll question, "Has the ability to create patches hurt initial game quality?"
Unless you are a very young gamer, you may very well remember the day where console games were not patchable. In fact, there was a time when what you saw was what you got. So in a lot of ways, creating a game on a console was a one shot kind of thing.
So it was interesting to see your perceptions on this relatively new phenomenon among console gaming (PC Gamers know all too well what patches have traditionally meant.)
The results?
As of this writing, 64% of you believe that patches have at least somewhat hurt initial game quality. Over 2/3 of you in that camp believe that very strongly.
On the other side, 20% believe that games have always been flawed and will remain that way, just the nature of the beast. The discussion generated by the poll was quite interesting as well (and somewhat heated as usual).
As for me? I'm in the camp of the former group, patches have always had a negative effect -- whether developers ever admit it or not -- on initial game quality. But I don't believe it's a universal truth. Some games simply get it right, but they're also the special ones which we remember forever.
If you haven't voted in the poll, or if you want to share your theory, be sure to sound off by commenting below!

I logged on to Operation Sports (OS) today. I generally check OS about 3-4 times per year. The reason for this is that I find its forums too cluttered in comparison w/ other sites. It is hard to find the info that you need in general and the forums are "stiff." I also don't like the fact that each page seems like it has 20 or so "stickies" at the top. To me, this defeats the whole purpose of a sticky.
Anyhow I log on today and for some odd reason I notice that I have a notification. I would not have noticed it normally because the font size is about 8pt. I click on the notification and it states that I received a warning for a violation of OS's TOS back in July 2008. I guess I had, at that time, put an image in my signature. Seriously. Needless to say, I think this is stupid.
Two reasons:
One, who the hell reads TOS these days? I haven't seen one addressing images in signatures. And yes, I know for a fact that I didn't post nudity or inappropriate language. It most likely was a picture of rapper Mos Def.
Two, why would the signature mechanism allow for an image to be included if it wasn't allowed? It makes no sense. Why ding me for something that you (OS) allow? Why not just reject the signature at the onset rather than go through the trouble of erasing it, then sending me a PM that I violated the TOS? Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Oh well...I guess I'll check back in another year as opposed to a few months. Perhaps at that time OS will come to its (common) senses.

DISCLAIMER: This was written for Madden 09 but the same concepts apply for ANY Madden game!Today’s article might be something that you already do and it may be something that you have never thought of. Madden is not that different then football on Sundays. There are a few basics that we ALL must follow in order to be successful. Unfortunately I think that most of us are overseeing the effectiveness of understanding what we are actually doing. Predominantly the number one thought on all our minds is, “What works, how do I do it, and tell me how to do it!” It seems no one wants to know WHY certain plays/formations work or even when to use certain plays/formation. Well no more! Today at Madden Bible we are going to resurrect your understanding of the game!
Each year when Zfarls and myself set forth to find a new offensive scheme we always look for five basic needs: a base set, a power running set, a spread set, a compressed set, and a bunched set. We scan through playbooks and search for ones that fit those needs. In Madden 2009 we came across two playbooks that fit this mold: Run N’ Gun and the Indianapolis playbook. Right away these were the two that we focused on. Zfarls took grasp of the Run N’ Gun while I worked the Indy playbook. Most playbooks can fit 3-4 of our expectations however these two specifically have all that we are looking for. There are specific reasons for each of the sets we have mentioned, let’s take a Madden Bible look!
Each one of the sets brings a certain aspect to our offense that the defense has to take particular steps in order to defend against properly. Keep in mind that we will be speaking in regards to these formations on a generic basis, we will discuss playbook specific later on. Let’s first take a look at our base set.
A base set is typically known for its ability to be able to both run and pass effectively out of. Base sets are also very balanced, which means we can attack all areas of the defense with the same success. However the effectiveness of this doesn’t 100% correlate over to Madden. The reason being is that there are specific plays and gimmicks that work more effectively then others and we have to knowingly take account of these. With this in mind we need to understand what works, we then need to dictate these basic plays into our “base” set. Curl route RC, FB dives, WR screens, and HB draws from shotgun are all overly effective in Madden 2009. Curl routes can we done in any formation and FB dives will be discussed in our running set, this leaves us with the WR screen and HB draw to focus on. What this means is that our base set should contain the ability to run a WR screen and also a HB draw. In theory this gives us the ability to “run” and “pass” to the point where the defense needs to make drastic changes to make a stop. Our base also should contain the ability to hit the defense with a “one and done” play. I also want to note that I typically like to come out in the FL screen as I can quickly hit the defense before they can make there adjustments. Each year the success in throwing deep drastically changes from the year prior. Whether it is a simple streak or a deep post route, we want to have the ability to attack the defense deep. Combine these basic steps into your base set for success in any version of Madden. Look for specifics of what works and then implement it into your offensive base set scheme. Onward to our running set!
Our running set is going to be what we audible to when we are in short yard situations/goaline situations/ball control situations. We also want to have our running set to be more compressed, (i.e. I-form Twin TE, full-house, and I-form TE Wing ) Once again we need to recognize what is effective in Madden and implement it into our running set. FB dives are the clear front runner all run plays. Running sets also need to be versatile in that they need to be able to attack but the inside A and B gaps and the outside C gaps. Our FB dive will take care of the A and B gaps while a HB toss (hb tosses work only to the left of the field, when we run them to the right our HB will take a stutter step not allowing the ball carrier to get upfield quick enough) and HB power O will allow us to attack the C gaps. It is important to understand that we want to use this formation for the above reasons. We shouldn’t be using it to complete big chunks of yards in the passing game. There is no reason we can’t sprinkle in a few plays here and there but we want to stick to a basic understanding of what we will use certain formations for and that’s to pound the rock!
***One of the reasons I love the Indy playbook so much is that there power running set ( I-form TE Wing) has a default quick audible that is the HB power O. What this means is that we can implement the FB dive from this same formation as one of our audibles and kill two birds with one stone. Using just one audible we gain the ability to attack all defensive gaps. This is HUGE in terms of scheme versatility.***
The spread offense might be the best way for a beginner to have success. The reason for this is that all the reads we make are quick and easy. If we read there are five or less in the box (area between the line of scrimmage and linebacker depth) we will run a HB dive. If there are six or more in the box we will pass. These are basic in nature and we will need to pick up certain tendencies from our opponent. Using the spread in hurry up is usually the best way to attack the defense. The spread will also cause major tells in the defense as far as pressure is concerned. In Madden when the defensive player is blitzing they move closer to the LOS when the offense is in a spread set. If we were in a compressed or balanced set the defense would look similar between a coverage defense and blitzing defense.
I like to have the ability to run the spread at any time on offense in case I am having a hard time distinguishing what the defense is exactly running. It is much easier to analyze the defense from the spread point of view. Even if our drive stalls, we will have a better understanding of how the defense is attacking us. In Madden we have the ability of running many different styles of the spread. Either in a five wide set, four wide shotgun set, or a four wide under center. I’m personally a fan of the four wide under center as we have the ability to pick up major yards on the ground when we read how many defenders are in the box. I use the spread more for an additional threat in the running game. I then work my other passing options off of the run. See the Doubles Close Singleback formation in the Indy playbook.
** Another reason I love the Indy playbook is because of the four wide doubles close formation under center set. It is both a spread and compressed set. It also has a WR screen as one of its quick audibles. We also have the ability to “flip” our play without the defense ever knowing With the ability to run effectively by reading the defenders in the box, WR screen, and the ability to attack the defense from a compressed set make this a top formation in Madden 2009.**
Compressed offensive sets are used generally to take advantage of offensive speed and lesser quality WR’s. Let’s face it not all teams have a Randy Moss, Terrell Owens etc. There big frames and speed are great in one on one matchups but not all WR can compete this way. That is where the
compressed set comes into play. Compressed sets allow for the offense to use “natural” picks to get free into space and to allow confusion and mishaps by the defense. Lots of crossing routes are used in this formation to allow WR to get open. In Madden the compressed set works just as it does in real life, however it also has an added bonus! When we use compressed sets in Madden we have the ability to tell what the defense is playing. If the defense starts wide and slides in we know they are in zone. If they start in with no slide, we know they are in man. The next added bonus is that we have the ability to motion any player to create new match ups and different offensive sets by doing so. (i.e Shotgun four wide tight, motion one of the outside WR to the opposite side, we will now have a bunched tight set ). The possibilities are endless with tight sets with all the different motioning we can use.
I like to use my compressed offensive sets in big situations as I have the ability to give the defense different looks almost on every single play with different motions. Motion is also a great way to pick up on what type of coverage the defense is. This is great for our more advanced player who may pick up on your use of the compressed set to expose his defense. They may come out in zone and then audible to man, this way it gives you that initial read that they are in zone when they are really NOW playing man. However using motion is the ultimate tell. Compressed sets are a must have for any offense!
Bunched sets will be our last set we will discuss for today. On a personal level bunched sets are my favorite to run. The reason being is that it’s a pain in the neck for defenses to stop! Having three offensive threats to one side of the field bunched together creates the natural picks of a compressed set and also the ability to force the defense to cover all areas on that side of the field. All bunched sets in Madden have some combination of a flat route, curl/streak route, and corner route. We want to hit our opponent early and often in the flat as this is how we will work our other plays in this formation. This will force the defense to play some type of cover two which in return will open up our other reads. What is so great about the bunched set is that we always dictate to the defense what to play. We then move on knowingly to attack other areas.
This is type of set is almost always my bread and butter. I go to this in times of need when I have to pick up a first down. I tend to save this set for later in the game so that the offense hasn’t grown accustomed to my tendencies. This is why we want to have the ability to give the defense different looks throughout the game. We should always save our “money” formation for important times. For me this is my money formation.
**Yet another reason why I love the Indy playbook. It has the Gun Bunch TE formation. This is a bunched formation with a TE on the LOS. This means that we have a compressed set as well as a bunch. What we gain from this is everything we have from compressed sets as well as bunch. Make sure to make this your bread and butter!**
Run N’ Gun Formations
Below are the formations Zfarls uses as described in today’s article. In parentheses are some plays from each that Zfarls likes to run.
Base Set- Shotgun Normal (FL Screen, HB Draw, HB Option)
Run Set- Full house (FB dive, HB screen) *use this formation as your running set if your more pass oriented. Use FB as one of your five preset audibles*
Run Set- I-form Twin TE (FB dive, HB toss, HB off tackle) *use this formation as your running set if you’re more run oriented. Use FB dive and HB toss as two of your five audibles*
Spread Set- Shotgun 5 wide (parallel slants, WR screen) *no running threat, defense may implement a 10 man coverage*
Spread Set- Shotgun 4 Wide (HB option, HB draw, Slot outside)
Compressed Set- Shotgun 4 Wide Tight ( X option, HB draw)
Bunched Set- Trips Te ( HB Swing, Trips Attack, HB draw)
Indianapolis Formations
Below are the formations I (Sgibs) use as described in the today’s article. In
parentheses are some plays from each that I like to run.
Base Set- Dice Slot ( FL screen, HB Draw, WR Drag, HB Angle)

The Washington Redskins have signed QB John Beck to a two-year, $2.25 million extension. His contract is now worth three-years, $3.35 million.
Beck is currently listed as fourth on the depth chart, but many expect him to make it over QB Richard Bartel. That is, if the Redskins keep three quarterbacks.
Beck, a former second-round pick and BYU standout, has only appeared in 5 games (starting 4) with the Miami Dolphins.
I have an idea that deals with sports in only the sense that the outcome of it is based on that. My solution solves many big problems. Such as the national defecit, inmate over crowding and crime and poverty.
My idea involves taking all the death row inmates and all the life sentence prisoners and putting them in arena style gladiator games. (Think of the movie gladiator.) Put it on pay-per-view and all the proceeds go to the government which trickle back down to us. Since even tho they do the crime we ultiamtely pay for it in tax dollars to feed and house all these people. I bet people would pay good money to see this on pay-per-view.
This would help solve our debt with the proceeds, it would reduce prison numbers, and people might think twice about going to prison and doing time based on the fact that prison is no longer a free ride. The only problem I could foresee is people intentially committing crimes for the publicity and the chance to be on pay-per-view. Also as an incentive you would have to shorten or let the guy who won free. So sport can be used in way to possibly solve a few issues...
****obviously this is more for entertainment purposes so don't take this too seriously but a discussion is welcome.****

Blake Hawksworth..Trade him as he's got a lively arm but is not a good fit in a Cardinals uniform. Needs a change of scenery.Kyle Lohse/Dennis Reyes/Jeff Suppan. What kind of garbage have they given us this year? Not even a chance to win. Reyes alone is like a left handed specialist which I understand but like 50-75 overweight easily. Looks terrible. Brendan Ryan. He's no Ozzie Smith and thats fine but his batting average is the lowest if not hovering around the .200. Simply unacceptable. Ok after doing research it's a paltry .218. Why is he still playing? I don't care how good defensively he is your constantly giving an out away nearly every time he comes out not to mention the pitchers spot. Ok as I look deeper giving him props Shortstop is not an easy position to play but 13 errors. Nope don't think so. Skip Schumacker 15 errors @ 2nd base. Between arguably your 3 best players Pujols,Holliday,Molina 10 errors combined. As for the pitching staff I feel sorry for the top 3 guys in the rotation that the front office couldn't go better and have just accepted this is the way it is. Hawksworth 5.13 ERA,Suppan 5.82 era,Lohse 7.12 era. See where I'm going with this? There already 7 games back let the kids play. Shut down the core players. There's only 4 weeks to play and that's my take on an abysmal season. Nice season Reds,my hats off to ya.
